C hris Welch and Lisa Bollins have two pets: Jeff the cat, who has been deaf since he was born eight years ago, plus Severus, a five-year-old snake.

The couple from Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire have been keeping costs down, mainly by bulk-buying their pet food.

They buy Kirkland Signature cat meals for Shaun from Costco for £25 for the 11. 35kg bag compared with £31. 40 from Amazon. Well-known cat foods brands such as Royal Canin or Hill’s Science Plan work out at about £5 per kg if you buy them in bulk online.

They purchase Dreamies kitty treats within bulk at Costco for 84p a packet, compared with £1. 20 at Sainsbury’s or 95p at Lidl.
